Step by step
- Install the WienMobil App and create an account: digital tickets are cheaper than paper ones, and the digital Jahreskarte is shown only in the app.
- If you travel daily, get the Jahreskarte: it starts on the first day of any month and is valid in the Kernzone Wien (U-Bahn, tram, bus, S-Bahn).
- Under 26? Get the Jahreskarte Jugend: since 1 February 2026 it has replaced the student Semesterticket.
- Pupils and apprentices (Lehrlinge) under 24 receiving Familienbeihilfe can get the Top-Jugendticket for €101 per school year — valid across Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland.
- Travel around Austria a lot? Compare with the KlimaTicket Ö (€1,400, reduced €1,050 for under 26 and 65+). For Vienna plus its surroundings there is the KlimaTicket Metropolregion.
- Paper tickets are sold at the Fahrscheinautomat in U-Bahn stations and at Info- und Ticketstellen. A paper ticket must be validated (entwerten) before the trip.
What to bring
- For digital tickets: a WienMobil App account
- For the plastic Jahreskarte (Scheckkarte): a current passport photo and a photo ID
- For the Top-Jugendticket: a Schülerausweis or Lehrlingsausweis
- For the KlimaTicket Ö Spezial: a Behindertenpass (at least 70%) or another qualifying document
Common mistakes
Not validating a paper ticket: without the stamp it is not valid.
Riding to the airport on the Jahreskarte: it is not valid beyond the Kernzone Wien border or on the CAT.
Looking for a Semesterticket or 48/72-hour tickets — they no longer exist since 2026.
Leaving your personal pass at home. You can show it within two weeks (online or in Erdberg) and then pay no fine — but do not pay anonymously on the spot.
