Step by step

  1. Download and fill in the Meldezettel form (link below) — one per person, children included.
  2. Ask the Unterkunftgeber — whoever provides the home: the owner or the main tenant — to sign the form.
  3. Sign it yourself and within 3 days go to any Meldeservice (Magistratisches Bezirksamt) with your documents.
  4. You receive a Bestätigung der Meldung — the confirmation of registration. Keep it: the bank, employer and school will ask for it.

What to bring

  • Completed and signed Meldezettel
  • Passport / travel document; for refugees — their card (e.g. asylum card)
  • For children under 18: birth certificate and proof of custody
  • Optional: rental or purchase contract

Common mistakes

No signature from the Unterkunftgeber — the form will be rejected.

Missing the deadline. Breaking the registration duty can be fined (under § 22 Meldegesetz — up to €726).

Forgetting to deregister from the old address when moving: do it within 3 days before or after moving out.
