Step by step
- Check the conditions: legal age, Hauptwohnsitz in Vienna and Austrian citizenship or equal status (e.g. recognised refugees or foreigners legally living in Austria for at least 5 years).
- If you have received Mindestsicherung for at least a month, the Mobilpass comes automatically — no application needed.
- Everyone else (e.g. pensioners with an Ausgleichszulage) applies online via mein.wien.gv.at, by post, e-mail or in person at MA 40.
- You receive a written decision (Bescheid), and the Mobilpass itself is sent by post.
- Buy the Mobilpass-Ticket in the WienMobil App, at a ticket machine or an Info- und Ticketstelle. When travelling, always carry the ticket, the Mobilpass and a photo ID.
- Apply for renewal 6 weeks before it expires.
What to bring
- Photo ID (e.g. passport) — for all household members
- Status documents: residence permit, Meldezettel, recognition decision, marriage/birth certificates
- Current proof of net income: pension decision, payslip, maintenance payments
- Familienbeihilfe decision or proof of long-term incapacity to work (if applicable)
Common mistakes
Travelling with a Mobilpass-Ticket but without the Mobilpass and a photo ID — the ticket is not valid without them.
Giving the Mobilpass or the paper ticket to someone else: both are personal and non-transferable.
Forgetting to write your name on the paper Mobilpass-Ticket and to validate it before the trip.
Renewing too late: the application is due 6 weeks before expiry.
